Tankless Water Heaters Need Maintenance Too!

So, you switched to a tankless water heater. You’re likely enjoying the many benefits that these unique systems have to offer. But that doesn’t mean you can skip out on water heater maintenance. Even though you don’t have a large water tank anymore, your tankless system still needs annual maintenance.

If you have a tankless water heater in Staten Island, NY, give our team a call to schedule your maintenance appointment. You can also keep reading to learn more about why your tankless water heater needs annual maintenance and what will happen if you skip it.

Clean the Water Filter

Your tankless water heater has two filters. The first is a water filter. This filter helps to eliminate minerals from hard water. If your home has hard water, it has more minerals than normal. You may not be able to see these minerals when you pour a glass of water, but the sediment can build up quickly and have an impact on your tankless water heater.

The filter helps to block these minerals from getting into the tankless water heater. However, as these minerals fill up in the filter they can block water flow. You need to remove this filter a couple of times per year, rinse it out, and replace it. Otherwise, you may notice lower pressure when you use hot water.

Clean the Air Filter

If you have a gas-powered tankless water heater, it also has an air filter. This air filter helps to block dirt and debris from getting into the system, just like the water filter does. Your tankless water heater needs strong airflow in order to heat the water on demand for your home. If airflow gets blocked, your tankless water heater may not be as efficient.

Just like the water filter, the air filter needs to be cleaned regularly. You may even need to clean it out more often than you clean out the water filter. Cleaning this filter is an important task we’ll perform on a scheduled maintenance appointment. If this filter gets clogged your tankless water heater may lose heating ability.

Flush the System

Even with the two filters in place, some dirt and debris will still make their way into your tankless water heater. Dust and dirt can clog the system and hard water mineral buildup leads to corrosion that can shorten the lifespan of the system. You can schedule our team to flush your tankless water heater once per year to keep it running great and prevent any corrosion damage.

This appointment is also a great opportunity for our team to check out your system and make sure it’s working at its best. If we notice any problems, we can address them before your tankless water heater stops working completely. We can also check your water and air filters to make recommendations for cleaning them more frequently if needed.
