Is the Kettle On Or Is It Your Boiler?

kettle-and-smart-temperature-meterYour friends are over and, because it has been so cold, you made some nice hot tea for everyone to enjoy. Between the tea and the boiler, you and your guests should be nice and comfortably warm.

Your only problem right now is that you could swear you can still hear the kettle whistling to alert you that the water is hot. You’ve checked the stove is off and the kettle is quiet, so where is that noise coming from?

The source of the sound may actually be from your boiler. And while the tea is nice and warm, if your boiler is making this noise, everyone may not be able to get as warm as you originally thought.

What is “Kettling?”

The noise that your boiler is emitting is likely to be known as kettling. As you can imagine from the name, it is a noise created by your boiler that sounds a lot like the high pitched whistle that comes from your tea kettle when the water is hot.

The key difference here is that kettling from your boiler is actually the sign of a problem that warrants Staten Island boiler service.

Why Kettling Is a Problem

There may be a chance that you think kettling is a normal thing. After all, when the water in your tea kettle gets hot, it makes this noise so isn’t that a normal thing for boiling water to do?

While boiling water does have the capability to create this type of noise if given a release, the kettling noise from your boiler isn’t actually being caused by this. Instead, it is due to a build-up within the water tank of your boiler.

Over time, minerals within the water that is fed into your boiler can settle on the bottom of the tank and form deposits. If these deposits are able to collect for long enough, this can make it harder for your boiler to heat water. It can also cause the kettling noise as water struggles to make it through the heat exchanger and instead evaporates into steam, making that tell-tale whistle.

This goes beyond being just an obnoxious noise. If left unaddressed, it can seriously harm your boiler!
