Before Calling for Cooling Repair… Some Checks to Make

April 24th, 2017

Spinning-fan-closeupThe time of the year when air conditioning systems will put in the biggest share of their annual workload is almost here. Before the mid-year heat comes roaring through Staten Island, we’d like to take some time to prep you for how to handle those days when your household AC isn’t, well, quite up to the task of keeping everyone cool.

Look, any air conditioning system can break. It doesn’t matter how well it was installed or maintained, no AC is invincible. (Certainly, quality installation and regular maintenance are the best way to prevent problems, but this can’t be perfect!) However, often when people think they have a busted air conditioner on their hands, the problem is a small one they can fix by checking a few things.

dandelion-in-fieldSpring always brings with it good news: warmer weather! It might come a bit later in spring than earlier, but it gets here no matter what.

But the warmer weather often brings with it bad news: allergy season! After a rainy stretch of weather here in New York, when the weather starts to heat up it means plant blooms—and a subsequent spike in the pollen levels. There’s also a rise in the growth of mold and mildew, which further creates allergy problems.

Now that allergy season is starting, you and other people in your household may be dealing with some unpleasant times because of airborne allergens. Sure, you can take medicine, but we have recommendations for how you can improve your home’s indoor air quality with the help of IAQ professionals. Planning an Air Conditioning Replacement This Spring?

March 27th, 2017

air-conditioning-system-with-catA working air conditioning system is your home’s best ally during another hot and humid summer in New York. This is one of the reasons that we urge all homeowners to arrange for AC maintenance in the spring. It preps an air conditioner with thorough inspections, tune-ups, and cleanings that will make its job easier—and therefore make it less likely it will drain energy or suffer major malfunctions over the summer. Maintenance offers a heads-up on any repair issues that need to be taken care of before the intense summer heat arrives.

But at certain point in the life of an air conditioner, repairs and maintenance will no longer be enough. If you suspect that your home’s AC has reached this point, then this is the spring to have an air conditioning replacement in Staten Island, NY.

March Madness with Your Heater and AC

March 13th, 2017

heating-and-cooling-homesSo far, March has been mostly a wet and cold month in Staten Island. Temperatures are taking a slight upturn, but it still feels as if summer is a long ways off.

However, March is a tricky month. A deceptive month. This is a time when the shifts in weather put serious stress on the heating and cooling systems of a home. For the heating system, the problem is that it’s already gone through a massive workload during the winter and may not be in the best shape at the end of the season. For the cooling system, the problem is that it may not be prepared yet to tackle heat waves. In both cases, a house faces a possibility of losing either its heating or cooling at critical times.

Indoor Air Quality Can Be a Serious Problem in Winter

January 16th, 2017

Question: Where is the air quality worse, outside a home or inside?

You’ll probably answer “outside,” since this is place people associate with pollution. But according to studies, the air quality inside a home (as well as other buildings) can be 3 to 4 times worse than the air outside! Why is this? It’s because a home has numerous sources of pollutants inside it. Just a short list: gas-using appliances, cosmetics, personal care products, hobby products, cleaning supplies, air fresheners, paint, varnish, and pressed wood products. Without any easy way for these contaminants to exit a home, they’ll soon start to build up.

Your Gas Furnace Still Needs Electricity!

January 9th, 2017

We’d like to clear up one of the major misunderstandings about furnaces that we still hear: a gas furnace will be able to supply a home with heat in case of a power outage. On the surface, this makes sense. A gas furnace uses the burning of natural gas to create the heat that then goes through the ventilation system. It’s like an old-fashioned stove this way: no need for electric power, just plain old heat from consuming another power source.

However, this is not true. If your gas furnace doesn’t have electrical power, it won’t run.

What’s That Sound from My Furnace Mean?

January 2nd, 2017

It would be nice if the technology of furnaces included an A.I. (artificial intelligence) program that could immediately diagnose any malfunction when it first starts and then notify homeowners of what is wrong. But we don’t yet have these sorts of furnaces. So to know when there’s a problem, we have to watch for certain warning signs. One of the most common is odd sounds.
